Football Shoots Greedy 'Super League' DEAD
Do you know what’s the difference between an actor & a sportsperson?
There is never a Charlie Sheen/Abhishek Bachchan in sports because unlike acting, sport is driven by exceptional excellence & athleticism not exceptional levels of nepotism & bangability.
But let’s not be ridiculous & say sport is absolutely fair. Even God, if real, ain’t fair. That basterd loves white people.
Money.
Tanks & Banks full of money buys the best ever coaches, best ever players & builds tens of mindblowingly spectacular stadiums with 100-thousand spectator capacity but no amount of money can create half of Lionel Messi or Michael Jordan.
Mumbai Indians can buy Sachin Tendulkar’s son in the IPL auction, but they can never make him even a quarter of Sachin Tendulkar.
On Sunday [18 April ’21], A break-away, closed-shop Super League was announced to literally replace the most prestigious annual club competition in football — Champions League.
For the humans who are aliens or rookies to football, I will explain the difference colloquially.
Champions League [CL] is a competition where 32 best teams in Europe compete for the famed Trophy. All 32 teams — no matter what their status in football is — have to earn the right to play each year.
Super League [SL] is a competition with 20 teams from Europe competing for the Trophy.
15 teams will have a ‘Birth Right’ to play — 5 teams will have to earn the right to play each year.
Super League would’ve turned Sport into Acting — based on nepotism & pedigree.
Here are the fucking problems
Six Big English clubs will be guaranteed qualification in Super League till the end of the world:
Manchester United
Manchester City
Liverpool
Chelsea
Arsenal
Tottenham
Under Champions League, the teams that finish in the top 4 of English Premier League [EPL] qualify for the Champions League each year. Now, with the Birth Right-based Super League, the Big Six English teams will qualify even if they’re playing like shit in EPL.
As I write this polemic, the current standings in EPL are:
Manchester City: 1st
Manchester United: 2nd
Leicester: 3rd
Chelsea: 4th
——————
West Ham: 5th
Liverpool: 6th
Tottenham: 7th
Everton: 8th
Arsenal: 9th
Liverpool 6th, Tottenham 7th & Arsenal 9th will qualify for the Super League but Leicester 3rd & West Ham 5th, who are above them in the EPL will not.
Big Six English clubs could well be ranked 15th-20th in the EPL, they will still play in the Super League & the teams that are beating them blue in EPL will never get a chance to compete for the Biggest Prize in Football.
Do you see the bloody problem here?
Here’s another example of the BigFat Problem with Super League.
With time, the top teams change. Here’s how 1994-95 EPL table looked like.
- Blackburn Rovers [Champions]
- Manchester United
- Nottingham Forrest
- Liverpool
- Leeds United
- Newcastle United
Tottenham: 7th
Chelsea: 11th
Arsenal: 12th
Manchester City: 17th
Yes, allegedly the Greatest Team on Earth right now & EPL champions 2020-21 — Manchester City were 17th in the EPL in 1995. And Blackburn Rovers - the EPL Champions in 1994-95 now play in the Championship — second-division football in England.
West Indies dominated Test Cricket in the ‘70s & ‘80s & India were pretty much crap. Now, if we followed the Super League logic, West Indies would automatically be in the Test Championship final & India wouldn’t even be considered even when India is ranked No. 1 Test Team right now. And Blackburn Rovers will qualify automatically for the Super League even when they’re not even playing first-division football in England.
Leicester in 2008 were playing in League One — third-division football in England.
In 2016, Leicester won the EPL — the Biggest League in England & the Universe.
To make non-football fans understand the magnitude of Leicester’s achievement, just imagine India [FIFA rank 105] beating France, Germany, Italy, England, Spain, Argentina, & Brazil to win the Football World Cup in 2024 or ever.
It will take a miracle for India to win the Football World Cup in 2024, but that’s exactly what Leicester pulled off in 2015-16 season — an unimaginable miracle.
Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United already have stature & the muscle of billion dollars to buy the best players, managers, stadiums. If Super League wasn’t shot dead before it was born, it would have also guaranteed them all the greatest trophies & billions of more dollars even if they played terribly like Germany did in the 2018 World Cup or CSK in IPL 2020.
It would have deprived humans of miracles like Leicester, who beat all the Big Six clubs with fat as fuck pockets & became champions of the greatest league in the world in 2015-16.
Leicester’s victory gave hope to me & 100s of million humans that they can also do something unimaginable even if they were born in a home with not enough money to buy shoes, not enough money to buy a football, but enough Hope to Dream infinite.
